Hearing about the history of The Life Church, which was once called Manna Christian Fellowship, it was clear to me that the church was built on God’s Word, the leading of the Holy Spirit, good leadership and faithful givers.
In the Gospel of Luke, we are told of how Mary Magdalene and the women who followed Jesus “provided for them [Jesus and his disciples] out of their means” (Luke 8:3).
It is astonishing to think that God would entrust the financing of the Gospel, the running of His church, the provision for its ministers and the Kingdom’s mission to us; and that is exactly what He has done.
From the passage of Luke 8:3, it is clear that God has entrusted this stewardship to ordinary people like you and I, not because He cannot provide for His own church and mission, but rather to offer us an opportunity to be blessed as we share in the furtherment of His mission.
Paul reminded the church in Corinth of the blessings of giving as he wrote, “He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness [Obedience to giving]. You will be enriched in every way to be gracious in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.” (2 Corinthians 9:10-11).
Unlike Mary Magdalene and the other women, a lot of us may look at our needs and what we do not have, rather than giving a portion out of what we have. It is said that the people of our generation live like ‘kings and queens’ in comparison to many of our ancestors, yet their degree of sacrifice, selflessness and generosity outweighs ours.
At The Life Church, our older generation and many who have passed on to glory, gave sacrificially and generously to provide us the building and facilities we currently have. It is now our time to give towards maintaining what has been passed down to us and to further the Kingdom’s purposes.
Our encouragement and confidence is that, He who provided for and blessed the older generation as they gave towards His Church and His mission, is the same God that calls us now to partner and share in the blessings of His mission for this generation.
Would you take that step of faith to give towards a greater purpose, in hope of reaping the blessings that Jesus described by saying, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom…” (Luke 6:38).
